Teachers are Born, Not Trained
Jun 30, 2008 | UncategorizedEach one of us comes to the point in his/her life when he/she must choose his future profession. It happens after graduation from school. While going to school a child makes up his mind about what subject he likes best and what science is the most attractive to him. Thus some children already know what they want to be and what career they want to make. However most of school leavers feel lost and uncertain. That is why it happens that the choice of future profession belongs to their teachers or parents. Sometimes they make the right choice for a child, but more often a new student realizes after a couple of years of studying at University that he does not like his profession and he would never enjoy this particular kind of work, which means that he will never get the best results in it. Everybody must do his best at his work and strive for better results and constant self-improvement. You cannot do it if you do not enjoy your job. Just like we all must do the best at our work, teachers must be the first to teach us that.
Teachers are born, not trained. I can agree and try to prove this saying from my own experience. I went to several schools in different countries when I was a schoolchild. Then I was a student of two different universities. Thus I have seen many teachers and professors; I have experienced different methods of teaching and styles of this profession. That is why I believe I can make some conclusions about what teachers are most loved by students and what qualities they ought to have.
“Those who know are those who cannot teach”. It often happens to be true, no matter how sad it sounds. Many teachers may have great knowledge and different degrees in science, huge experience and be the most prominent in their area, and at the same time they have no clue how to make children and students interested in their subject, how to make them study and attend all classes, how to make them active in the class and do all the tasks with joy and readiness. Many of them cannot explain the student how important the subject is and why they should learn it, they cannot give the material to students so that everybody understood it and got all aspects of the lesson clear and easy to remember. These teachers may be the best specialists in their area but they are not able to present their knowledge to students in an appropriate and adequate way. It is really not their fault, because teaching is a talent given by the Lord.
However I also believe that there is another talent a lot of us lack. It is to be able to define what you can do best and what you are not able to do. Many teachers do not realize (or do not want to) that they are not born teachers. And a born teacher is the one who can teach and who is loved and respected by students. It is the one who helps and has children study, but not the one who deprives students of any desire to go to school or university. I am a student myself now and I must admit that it is awful when teachers cannot or rather do not want to find common ways of learning with students. Some can argue and say that the students are too demanding now, that it is their job to study and nobody is responsible for their “likes and dislikes” for certain classes. I can partly agree with it. But as I said, everybody has his own part in life and his job to do, and we should try to be best at anything we do, especially our jobs.
