The abacus has been around in various forms for over 2300 years. It was used for various counting and operational tasks. One might even call it the original math manipulative (unless you count fingers and stones). In my younger years, abaci were relegated to the bottom shelf or used as a toy for the kinesthetic kids. These days, abaci can meet the same fate that the abaci of my youth did. The first known abacus, the Salamis tablet, collected dust for over 2100 years. For all those lonely and banished abaci on dusty shelves everywhere, I dedicate this article on how to represent, add and subtract whole and decimal numbers.
As most teachers know, the use of manipulatives by younger elementary students helps them to understand the concepts of place value and operations later on. In my search for a variety of manipulatives to teach number sense, addition and subtraction, I came across a convenient tool in the abacus. I’m sure it was no coincidence that each row on the abacus included exactly ten beads, but there was no operators manual with the abacus I found. When I found an instruction manual several years later, I found that the manufacturer of the abacus saw it as no more than a counting device and had no idea of the place value power inherent in the design.
Representing Numbers With a Dusty Abacus
When I first started using an abacus as a manipulative in math class, I was teaching grade six. In the grade six curriculum, students were supposed to represent whole numbers greater that one million and decimal numbers to thousandths. If you count the number of places from one million down to thousandths, you get ten places. Coincidentally, the abacus had ten rods of ten beads each. I’m sure what I discovered was discovered long ago, and some manufacturers probably even send out better instruction manuals that make note of this, but at the time, it was a completely new discovery.
To make a long story short, I assigned each row a specific place value starting with millions at the top, and thousandths at the bottom. One could use a strip of tape or an indelible marker to label the rows. To represent a number, a student would simply move the number of beads for the value of each place in the number they were given. For example, the number 325,729 was represented by moving three of the hundred thousands beads, two of the ten thousands beads, five of the thousands beads, seven of the hundreds beads, two of the tens beads and nine of the ones beads.
I didn’t have a class set of abaci, so I made up little sketches of an abacus (six or so per page) and students showed representations of numbers using these.
Adding and Subtracting Numbers With a Polished Abacus
Once students are familiar with representing numbers using an abacus, they can move onto adding and subtracting numbers. The idea of adding using an abacus and place value is quite a simple process. Begin by representing the first number. Add the value of each place value in the second and subsequent numbers one at a time beginning with the lowest place value and regroup as necessary.
Consider this simple example, 178 255. The student would represent 178 on the abacus to begin. She would then add five to the ones row. Since there aren’t five more beads to add, this first move would also involve regrouping. The student would move the two remaining ones, then regroup by sliding all ten ones back and replacing them with a ten. She would then move three more beads since she already moved two of them for a total of five. Since there was some regrouping, there would now be eight tens. The students needs to add five more, so there would be another regrouping, this time of ten tens to make a hundred. Finally, the student moves two additional hundred beads; this time regrouping isn’t necessary. If everything was done correctly, the student would end up with four hundreds beads, three tens beads and three ones beads.
A variation on addition is to add the second and subsequent numbers from the highest place value to the lowest place value.
Subtracting is much the same as addition, but it involves “removing” beads. The procedure for subtracting is to represent the first number then to subtract the value of each place value in the second and subsequent numbers beginning with the highest place value.
Consider this example, 3.252 - 1.986. The student would first represent 3.252 using the abacus. He would begin by subtracting one one. This is fairly straight forward because there are enough ones available. In the next step, though, the student has to subtract nine tenths from two tenths. He begins by subtracting two of the nine tenths, but he then has to regroup one of the remaining ones into ten tenths. Once he has ten more tenths, he can subtract the remaining seven tenths. He continues by subtracting eight hundredths from five hundredths, and again, he has to regroup, this time, one of the tenths into ten hundredths. The final step also involves regrouping since six thousandths must be subtracted from two thousandths. In the end, the student hopefully ends up with one one, two tenths, six hundredths, and six thousandths (1.266).
Subtraction could also be accomplished by subtracting the lowest place value first, but this sometimes means more manipulations of the beads which means more chance for error.
Conclusion
The use of the abacus takes a little bit of time to master. It is important that the teacher and the students use the correct place value terminology (e.g. “regroup ten hundreds to make one thousand” instead of “turn ten green beads into one blue bead”), so the concepts of place value, addition, and subtraction can be transfered to mental strategies and paper/pencil algorithms. Remember, the best way to dust and polish an abacus is with little fingers!

Diamond is made up of carbon. Carbon that has been subject to extremely high pressure and heat for a long time becomes diamond. The longer the carbon is exposed to such conditions, the larger the diamond that will be formed. Over millions of years, carbon deposits slowly crystallize into diamond.
A natural place where the extreme conditions needed to form diamonds exist is deep inside the Earth. At some 90 miles or 150 kilometers under the continental crust, the pressure is known to be around 5 gigapascals and the temperature around 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit or 1,200 degrees Celsius.
Natural diamonds are brought to the surface of the Earth by volcanic emission. The hot molten lava cool down and solidifies into rock within which diamonds can be found.
How the name ‘diamond’ came to be
The name “diamond” has been traced back to the Greek word “adamas”, which was a literal description for the hardest substance known, but more subtly means indestructible. It is no wonder that diamond remains as the ultimate symbol for prestige, power and passion.
How diamond came to be associated with weddings
A celebrated early account of the exchange of a diamond engagement ring is that between the Emperor of Hapsburg (today’s Austria) and his wife, Mary in 1477.
According to Egyptian beliefs and Christian records from Seville (in Southern Spain), the ring finger (next to the last little finger) of the left hand has a vein that runs straight to the heart. Hence, the diamond ring is always worn on this particular finger.

When we study about what has happened in the past, we always look at important figures, important events, important groups, ideas, and movements. History is so broad that it can include everything from what has happened in Latin America, China and Europe. Learning about history is important because some of it should be common knowledge. By knowing a bit about what has happened in our world, you can help see why things are the way they are as of know, what will happen in the future, how great minds work, how evil people work and much more. It doesn’t hurt to know too much about history.
One basic importance of history is to know enough to do well because your knowledge of it is tested. It can be in the classroom, it can be in the UN, or for a historian meeting. If you do not know enough, than you put yourself at risk of not achieving what you can.
It is also important to know about world history because you can then educate others who do not know as much. They may not need to know much about history in their selected fields of study but without knowing a little is not acceptable. If you do not know about what has happened, you do not truly understand the word. By looking at what has happened, you can understand cause and effect, how important ideas and events played out and more.
When you understand history, you understand basic concepts and ideas. You will learn about cause and effect, relationships and human nature. Since history is mainly about what causes the next event or action, people can clearly understand how things are related to one another. For example, is there is extreme repression of the people in a certain country over many years, there will probably be some people who will take the stand to fight back, possibly forming a revolution. Another example is when the China government copied their ideals from the communist ideas of Marxism because of what they felt about the majority of the people. Reading further on, if you know enough about history, you can see how people’s attitudes and feelings are changed as a result of an action. Some of these people may choose to use violent tactics or choose to use non violent measures. You can understand the nature of these kinds of people.
When you also know about history, you can understand what it really means to be in someone else’s shoes. We all live our own separate lives and choose to be affected by what we see around us. We can take action or we can remain passive. When you read about the history of various countries, you can understand the pain, the joy and more that people feel when they do something difficult or amazing. You can understand what it means to have no food, or what is means to be rich and without love. Just like reading a book, history is a big book filled with many real stories. Know you can picture what it is like to live in china during communism or what it means to be an American.
By understanding history, you can understand why things are they way they are right now. Many of the past events and histories in the world have shaped what we are as of now. From the major wars, including the American Revolution only go to show the nationalism and pride of the people of America. If you look at Africa, you can understand why it is not as modern and strong as other countries today. They have been isolated from the world for some time until European colonists came and took over. Countries such as Bolivia are in a horrible situation because of the fact that they were slow to move forward. Globalization affects everyone, but some people are taken advantaged over while other gain much more. If you look at India, you can understand why it freed itself from Britain. Lead by a man who used non-violent actions, they were able to prove that they were being taken advantaged of. You can also understand why countries have conflicts because of territories, because of disputes and more. All of these countries that make up the world today have changed since the beginning of time. The reason for change is evident and helps us understand the current place we are in now.
By understanding what has happened in the past and the current situation of today, we can better understand what can happen in the future. By looking at what has happened, we can understand what we should avoid and what we should make better. We live in a country that is strong today because of what the past leaders have all done. If we avoid problems that we have done, such as the Great Depression, we won’t have to deal with that ever again. If we understand the importance of friendship and rights, we can make them stronger than ever. If we have read about a problem that we say should have been taken cared of a long while ago, then you should help out situations that are happening now. Some of these situations include Darfur and the war in Iraq. History allows us to make the changes needed to make this a better world.
Lastly, history is so important because each of us is part of the history that takes place. We may not know much about what is going around, but each of us is a member of what is going on right now. We can choose to help out situations that matter to us and do avoid ones that we choose not to tackle. Remember, history does not stop at the textbooks, it merely continues until the end of time. Each one of us is a living textbook of what is to come.

Of course any woman as any person heeds help, support and a little faith to carry on from time to time. Often she manages to find these in herself, in other times she seeks help from her family and close friends. Many women turn to the Christian books to seek support and advice during hardship.

From time immemorial it has been known that some people, Yogis, Gurus, Shamen, Priests, Saints, Paramahamsas, Buddhas, Christs, have evolved to a state of high energy. For example, Ramakrishna.
These pure and good people, wanting benefit and happiness for all, without a trace of selfishness and competition have been known to have psychic powers.
Their search for energy and goodness has precipitated within them the next stage of human evolution.
For thousands of years they have been Good Doctors, Good Priests, founders of religion, Philosophic Geniuses, Advisors of Kings, Musical Geniuses, Poets, Makers of the Law.
For thousands of years these people, wielding amazing Siddhis or Psychic powers, have been recorded as healing of the sick, casting out mental sickness, coming in dreams, communicating through telepathy, the radiation of specialised energies, leaving the body, entering into the body of another, astral travel, telling the future, acting at a distance, raising Kundalini, Shaktipat, the ability to pass healing into amulets, temples, places of peace, pilgrimage sites, creating miracles, birds and beasts come to them in peace.
Sri Ramakrishna’s life is a wonderful record of realization and the powers that follow upon it, powers which in themselves did not particularly interest him, drowned as they were in the knowledge of the higher vision.
Indeed, he said that psychic powers could take one away from the path of self realization because of the selfish ego of having psychic powers. Just because a person has psychic powers, does not mean that the person is good, or that the psychic powers are used with good intent.
The enlightened always come from the direction of good, of goodness, and the aura of psychic powers follows them like a shadow, although they themselves think nothing of them.
Realization came to Ramakrishna in the typical way–devotion, longing for liberation from the bondage of the senses, and then one day with the help of his Master, Totapuri, suddenly, a flood of light and the loss of self-consciousness for 21 days in Samadhi.
I will mention some of the powers it brought with it. They are described as “characteristics distinctive of the highest degree of concentration.”
He would meet his disciples at the door, and begin to answer, without being asked, the written questions they carried in their pockets.
He could tell by touch the character of anyone who had even come in contact with his food, clothes or mat.
He would say of one from whom he shrank, that the contact with anothers negative energy and deep energy blockages had “burnt” him.
Sometimes–”Look, I can eat this. Some good soul must have sent it.”
His disciples have told of the strangeness with which they would listen to one side of a dialogue carried on for hours while Ramakrishna, resting, evidently believed himself to be communicating with beings they could not see.
He had his own nervous force so completely under control that during his last illness he could remove all consciousness from the cancer in his throat and allow it to be operated upon as if under a local anesthetic.
He could interpret the smallest detail of the physical constitution of others as expressing their inward personality.
He would throw a disciple into the hypnotic state and learn from his subconscious mind all that was lodged there.
At times, he said, men and women seemed to him like glass and he could look them through and through.
Above all he could by his touch exercise a compelling power over other lives.
Through this touch they also received flashes of the higher consciousness which molded their futures, this touch is called Shaktipat.
An example is given of his placing his hand on the heads of a row of persons with a different phrase for each, and each receiving a different gift. With one, overwhelming joy; to another a great light which never left him, so that he could never pass shrine or temple after without seeming to see there in that light a Form which he described as “the Spirit that dwells in the images,” and so forth.
One of his disciples says, in speaking of the usual talk of men’s consciousness: “Consciousness? What does consciousness matter? It is as NOTHING compared with the unfathomable depths of the subconscious and the heights of the superconscious.
Some disciple saw Ramakrishna gather in ten minutes from a man’s subconscious mind the whole of his past, and determine from that his future and his powers.
Of this disciple Ramakrishna eagerly asked when he first saw him, “Tell me, do you see a light when you are going to sleep?” “Doesn’t everyone?” asked the boy, in wonder. He had indeed a consciousness of light so great that he took it for granted that someone had placed a bright lamp behind his head.
When the disciple was to speak in public, which he did frequently and with power, he would hear at night in his room a voice shouting at him the words he would say next day. It was given to him. This man was the well-known student of Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda.
Doing all this they also pass on their energy in Shaktipat for the awakening of all good students.
The shaktipat, the radiation of psychic energies by the enlightened can awaken these abilities in all who come to them. This has been known and recorded in the Sacred literature for thousands of years.
Uppadesa, or the grace of the masters is said to come in a glance, touch, or in silence.
Indeed, some sacred literature states that only by access to the energies of the Masters, can enlightenment be passed on.
The search for this next step in evolution comes from the enhancement, the increase, of energy.
As fire is spread from candle to candle. As the sacred word resonates in both he who gives and he who receives. As Grace dropeth as the gentle dew from Heaven, twice blessed..
So a preparation of he who receives, the student, the candle, by the removal of Negative Energy, Energy Blockages. A lack of Energy Blockages allows more Spiritual Energy to be absorbed and used to crystalise, complete, finalise, create the Spiritual Body of another Master, another transmitter of the Truth!
They say that Masters represent infinite power through a complete loss of the selfish ego - When the robe was touched no credit was claimed by the wearer, It was your faith which healed you! said the Master - and so the truism, It takes two to Tango, - the student must be purified and prepared by evolution and spiritual practice to accept the Force, the Energy transmitted by the Master.
All energy blockages stopping the flow of energy through the system and preventing the buildup of psychic power in the system must be removed.
Thus we learn and practice Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation, Samadhi, Samyama, the Kundalini Kriyas, Chinese Alchemical Taoism and the Micro and Macrocosmic Orbits, VITRIOL and The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, The Grounding of Negative Energies, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Raja Yoga and the Eighteen Classical Yogas of the Bhagavad Gita.
Thus the torch is passed on from Master to Student.
Another candle is lighted up!
And Masters have existed in every time period.
They exist Now!!
Satchidanand,
Director of Energy Enhancement, is one of the leading teachers of Meditation.!
He helps people worldwide reach further than they EVER thought possible,
FASTER!!!

For those who wish to study and finish college but cannot afford the high cost of education, you have 2 choices, either you apply for a scholarship program or you apply for a student loan.
While entering a scholarship program seems more reasonable than taking student loan, both still have their pros and cons.
Of course, when you apply and happen to enter college under a scholarship program, you don’t have to worry about the finances and fees you have to pay for the entire duration of your studies. There are also thousands of grants that are up for grab every year. Scholarship programs have designed system that works to facilitate every student depending on their financial needs. Whether you are an intellectual person or someone with an average IQ, you can still fit in into one of the many scholarship programs available. Many scholarship programs cater those who are artists, stage performers, athletes, and students with special skills in other fields. They may not have high level of intelligence but they can get scholarships with their talents.
Scholarship programs are also available to students of race, minorities, foreigners, and other sector of society that needs financial assistance. Other programs are also given not only on college students but also on students who want to pursue further studies.
Many institutions also offer scholarship programs that for their members like union groups and religious organizations among others.
In case you don’t fit in to one of the criteria of becoming a scholar, the option to take is student loan.
Student loan is a type of financial aid that helps student to pay their tuition provided that they would pay all the expenses back to their sponsors.
If scholarships do not ask for return, student loans do.
The good thing about student loan is that you can move freely as a regular student in the campus without worrying so much of maintaining high grades and skipping other activities to attend gym practice or early morning job. Although you can always apply for scholarships under the available grants, you are the one who choose what it is.
A drawback though (if you want to consider it a drawback since you have already finished your studies) is that you have to pay the amount you have barrowed from the student loan up to the last cent. Although you have to do this when you are working, it may seem to be a burden to you.
But who cares? The important thing is whether you finish your college through scholarship program or student loan, you can still be proud of your achievement.

Just what on earth is foam? It is a question that has plagued mankind for centuries. Well, alright, maybe not. Nevertheless, foam has long been a mysterious material, yet useful in many ways, not least for insulation and packaging.
Put simply, foam is plastic that has been melted, had bubbles of gas forced into it, and then been left to re-form. This produces a cheap, soft, spongy material, which can then be sliced into specific shapes or simply minced up into pellets.
The kind of foam you’re probably familiar with is packing foam. Anytime you order something (or sometimes when you just buy it in a shop), it will come wrapped in a box surrounded by foam to protect it. This works because even relatively small amounts of foam are capable of taking the force of a large impact, preventing the object that is being protected from ever hitting a hard surface and being damaged.
Packing foam comes in many forms: sheets, pellets (‘packing peanuts’), blocks, and more. If you want some, the best thing to do is probably buy it from an office supplies store or, in larger quantities, direct from a supplier. If you have things delivered in packing foam often, then you might also consider re-using that foam – after all, while foam is disposable, there’s absolutely no reason not to use it more than once.
The other kind of foam that you might encounter at some point in your life is insulating foam. This foam might even be in your walls right now as you’re reading this article, without you even knowing it. The advantage of filling your walls with foam is that it can be easily squirted in through a relatively small hole, providing effective insulation without you having to do too much work on the wall. Like with packing, foam insulation is both cheap and effective, not to mention easy to use.

Many people decry a time when man may merge with machine. Currently replacement of body parts is only done when someone is seriously injured such as an accident or in war. So far there is not a lot of talk about these issues and the technology and Bio Ethics debate, but you can hear some rumblings out there. Are people scared of the future? Many believe they are, especially as the replacement parts are better than the original. Maybe not better, but will last longer, be stronger and provide better performance. “better, faster, stronger!”
Regarding the replacement of body parts which are not working or have been failed in the human body, soon we will have choices of re-generation due to advances in BioTech, stem cell and other methods being theorized and researched with nanotech, enzyme, protein, RNA, DNA therapy and switching.
If you can get a Bionic Eye like Steve Austin or a Bionic Ear like Lindsey Wagoner, what is wrong with that? If I can get a computer chip with all the worlds libraries in my head attached somehow and accessible with my memory, why wouldn’t I? If we can help our young soldiers win more battles thru better uses of technologies or allow long-term space travel using such systems, why not? Think on this in 2006.
