Teachers are Born, Not Trained 0

Jun 30, 2008 | Uncategorized

Each one of us comes to the point in his/her life when he/she must choose his future profession. It happens after graduation from school. While going to school a child makes up his mind about what subject he likes best and what science is the most attractive to him. Thus some children already know what they want to be and what career they want to make. However most of school leavers feel lost and uncertain. That is why it happens that the choice of future profession belongs to their teachers or parents. Sometimes they make the right choice for a child, but more often a new student realizes after a couple of years of studying at University that he does not like his profession and he would never enjoy this particular kind of work, which means that he will never get the best results in it. Everybody must do his best at his work and strive for better results and constant self-improvement. You cannot do it if you do not enjoy your job. Just like we all must do the best at our work, teachers must be the first to teach us that.

Teachers are born, not trained. I can agree and try to prove this saying from my own experience. I went to several schools in different countries when I was a schoolchild. Then I was a student of two different universities. Thus I have seen many teachers and professors; I have experienced different methods of teaching and styles of this profession. That is why I believe I can make some conclusions about what teachers are most loved by students and what qualities they ought to have.

“Those who know are those who cannot teach”. It often happens to be true, no matter how sad it sounds. Many teachers may have great knowledge and different degrees in science, huge experience and be the most prominent in their area, and at the same time they have no clue how to make children and students interested in their subject, how to make them study and attend all classes, how to make them active in the class and do all the tasks with joy and readiness. Many of them cannot explain the student how important the subject is and why they should learn it, they cannot give the material to students so that everybody understood it and got all aspects of the lesson clear and easy to remember. These teachers may be the best specialists in their area but they are not able to present their knowledge to students in an appropriate and adequate way. It is really not their fault, because teaching is a talent given by the Lord.

However I also believe that there is another talent a lot of us lack. It is to be able to define what you can do best and what you are not able to do. Many teachers do not realize (or do not want to) that they are not born teachers. And a born teacher is the one who can teach and who is loved and respected by students. It is the one who helps and has children study, but not the one who deprives students of any desire to go to school or university. I am a student myself now and I must admit that it is awful when teachers cannot or rather do not want to find common ways of learning with students. Some can argue and say that the students are too demanding now, that it is their job to study and nobody is responsible for their “likes and dislikes” for certain classes. I can partly agree with it. But as I said, everybody has his own part in life and his job to do, and we should try to be best at anything we do, especially our jobs.

Locusts To Help Make Energy From Bio Waste, part III 0

Jun 30, 2008 | Uncategorized

If we bring the locusts to a feasting area of green cut up bio-waste to allow them to turn that into methane and protein, then we will be able to win the game. We must first limit the areas for egg laying so we do not end up with red-goo syndrome and runaway locust populations. This can be done by; pancake stacking, similar to bread racks moist sand in trays, about 4 inches thick and ten inches apart. Sprinkled with grass clippings like a light snow or dust upon the ground. Once the Adult females have laid their egg pods they have fulfilled their biological mission and need as per their genetic software code and will of course need to repeat this every six weeks or so. These little fulfilled species will be happy and we as humans get the best of all worlds, protein, energy and solving of a plight upon the earth.

So if you cannot beat them, eat them? Sounds like good advice. And while we are taking “Sound” we should remember this is how we will control them by using acoustic frequency energy to create an artificial barrier which the locusts will wish to stay with it’s boundary. Just like for the most part humans are bound by gravity, time and distances thru space. We are stuck here on Earth and seem to be most content to fulfill our biological needs, to be born, procreate, create a little controversy and chaos, sound and fury and then die, without really effecting much outside our realm here on Earth.

When a swarm erupts we spring into action with aircraft which are equipped with acoustic wave devices which corral the locust swarm into a tighter pattern and funnel them to the nearest dump site with some bio-waste, we then keep feeding the swarm with more bio-waste until we are ready to again move the swarm. Each region of more than 500 miles will have a locust farm for energy and protein food. Each bio waste site will be set up in a pentagon grid pattern throughout regions know to have locusts plagues as per history and known population of adult locusts. The new populations of locust swarms brought into the farms will keep the local populations healthy with bio-diversity and prevent species-specific diseases which might later kill off the locusts in the farm and may eventually jump species and cause a problem in our human food supply.

Desert Locusts will fly at speeds of 10 mph to 13 mph, the swarms can travel up to 80 miles per day, Locusts have been known to cross the red sea in swarms (about 180 miles). There is a documented case where swarm migrations in 1954 went from North-West Africa to the British Isles. In one documented case the insects went from West Africa to the Caribbean in about ten days in 1988, 5000 km. Solitary Desert Locusts fly at night and the gregarious adults in swarms fly during the daylight times. With such distances this insect seems to be natures perfect corral able food supply. We will use several aircraft with UAVs in formation as flying barriers with sonic guidance equipment to steer these locusts to the designated point.

To get locusts to swarm is really easy, they change behavior when they are in tight density as the population in an area swells they take to travel, becoming highly mobile. They typically act as an individual insect, but have swarming capabilities and behavior patterns as well, so by increasing the populations they will have swarming innate characteristics. The locusts even begin to change colors going from brown to pink or yellow. The pink locusts are the younger and the yellow are the adults. At one time these different colors were thought to be different species and if you look at some of the older encyclopedias you will still see that mistake. By combing the desert with sonic finders we can round up locusts and force them into smaller and smaller areas until they take flight, then we guide their natural migration to a pointed suited to their goal, food supply and procreation points.

We will eventually in the future be able to round these locusts up with UAVs using GPS Satellite Way Points.

Most weather satellites and GeoSats cannot see Locust Migrations and Swarms, but since this is a World Security Issue; the most advanced and sophisticated Boeing, Hughes and Lockheed Spy Satellites will be used to track the locusts swarms and assist the aircraft and UAVs as they corral the swarms.

www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/navigators/plague.html

Aircraft and UAVs can be later replaced with specially designed: mini blimp UAVs with nano-covered skin, which the locusts cannot eat through, but the skin remains light weight for maximum payload (NASA is testing such material now). The Blimp will move relatively slow and can stay with slow moving locusts guiding them around villages, farmer fields, livestock and surface mammals. In studying the different frequencies that farmers use to control pests, this technique is already proven. There are many organic thinking farmers who are trying to reduce pesticides and use sound instead. One interesting program is in Washington State in Yakima where apple growers have been highly successful in keeping insects from the trees. Farmers today are dealing with this problem today in Israel:

Solar System Lesson Plans 0

Jun 30, 2008 | Uncategorized

Solar system lesson plans help people learn about the planets and their features in a systematic way. The goals of a well drawn-out solar system lesson plan include the development of thinking, reasoning and collaborative skills.

Topics included in a common solar system lesson are the basics of the solar system, relative distances of planets within the solar system, exploring the planets, and solar system adventures. The total time required is 3 classes with approximately 60 minutes each. The total preparation time for the teacher is about 1 hour. The first period introduces the solar system which is followed by a group discussion. The second period covers relative distances of planets in the solar system and the observation of solar images. Chart preparation of planets is part of the homework. The third period includes discussion and review of planet features from homework, the summarizing of the concepts and facts for gas giant planets.

The objective of a middle school level solar system lesson plan is to give a thorough knowledge of space and the vast emptiness between the planets. These lessons also cover ways of determining the size of a star. Topics for middle school level lesson plans include exploring the planets, charting the planets, solar system and the universe generally. The total time required for this is 4 classes with approximately 60 minutes each. The normal preparation time for the teacher is 2 hours.

High school level lesson plans’ objective is to make students observe and explain the apparent movement of the sun and the moon, relating the location of the sun to the time of day and naming and describing the seasons. Before going to the lessons, the student should understand the concepts of basic physics and math including the concepts of ratio, angular velocity, and measurement of an arc in a circle. The topics covered for high school level students are planetary rotation, angular velocity, period of rotation, orbital motion, and angles and angular measurement. The time required for completing the full unit is several days to two weeks.

Colleges Support Students through Student Services 0

Jun 29, 2008 | Uncategorized

There are two important factors affecting community colleges today. Both are dependant upon each other. These factors are student services and students of diverse backgrounds. Both are influencing college campuses all over the country.

Although student services have become significant areas of community colleges today, it wasn’t until the 1970’s, when college enrollment dropped that schools began to really examine these services. In the beginning, student services served as a method in which colleges could regulate student activities. As time evolved, student services became a support system for students to meet their educational objectives.

There are six areas that student services play a role: recruitment/retention, counseling/guidance, orientation, extra curricular activities, financial aid, and articulation. As was stated earlier, there was a drop in student enrollment during the 70’s. This placed pressure on community colleges. Institutions decided to put forth additional effort into recruitment and retention services. Soon, colleges started working with neighboring high schools to encourage students to enroll. Some campuses began offering college level courses for high school students and passing out information on assessment testing. Catalogs were created and distributed to promote community college.

At the same time, institutions started looking for new students. These new students came from underrepresented groups or individuals from diverse backgrounds. With an increase of these students, campuses found that supplementary special services were needed to be built. This group of diverse backgrounds required their academic progress to be monitored frequently in order to boost success. Basic skills and needs assessments were also developed and implemented. All of these improvements to student services have benefited both the students and the community colleges.

The second area of student services has improved over time. The counseling and guidance section of student services works with students to strike a balance between academic abilities and student goals. Through career services, guidance, and counseling, students take an active part in their own educational growth and progression. Within this section, students with disabilities were also a focus. Studies show that these students were twice as likely to drop out of community college, compared to those without disabilities. This fact increased the need for opportunities to build self-esteem and study skills necessary for these students to succeed.

Student orientation is the third area of student services. Today, student orientation has become a crucial determining factor in the future success of a student. Guiding students through the transition from high school to community college is very important. Community colleges offer incoming students tours and classes to make this shift easier. Seminars during the school year have also proven to be beneficial in retaining students throughout the first year.

Extra curricular activities are the fourth and least common area of student services. Students with strong leadership aspirations, usually attend universities. However, community colleges do recognize the benefit of preparing students for future leadership career roles. There are student government organizations and clubs available. Faculty members who work with these groups are viewed more as consultants, rather than advisors.

The fifth area is financial aid. This part of student services grows each year. Most students attending community colleges benefit from financial aid. Shifts in aid result in fluctuation in college enrollment. The availability of grants, loans, and aid allow many students, who might have not thought of going to school, a chance to better themselves. With the percentage of community college students with full time jobs increasing, each year the need for financial aid resources at the college multiplies.

Articulation or the moving of students from one point to another is the sixth area of student services. Community colleges work with universities to match curriculum and course work. Students are then able to move from one school onto the next. However, this linear progression has seen changes in recent years. Students sometimes start in the university and then transfer to the community college or students might complete a degree at one school and then move to the other to earn another certification or degree. With today’s complex world, community colleges and universities must work together on articulation.

Evaluating the special programs of a college is part of the decision making process. When potential students choose a college, researching the types of student services available at the campus is significant.

The Curse of the Saco River 0

Jun 29, 2008 | Uncategorized

The Saco river begins in the mountains of New Hampshire and winds it’s way through southern Maine to the Atlantic ocean. It is a rough and dangerous river which has taken the lives of many who chose to risk it. Every year the news media reports the crashing of boats on the rocks or kids braving the ice chunks. The mouth of the river is a place called Camp Ellis. Just a few weeks ago during a major storm a few houses collapsed as Camp Ellis with the help of the river, is slowly eroding away into the ocean.

I once went on a fishing trip with my father. We went to a popular fishing spot at a place called the Skeleton Dam. The water was deep there, so it was the perfect spot for catching trout. There were a few people there that day, including an old man who my father just happened to know from his own childhood. They talked for a little while.

He, at one point, turned to me and said, “You know this river is cursed don’t you?” Of course I didn’t, but I was sure about to find out. As it turns out, there is an old legend in southern Maine regarding the early English settlers and the Saco River.

The story goes like this. Back in the summer of 1675, a group of drunken sailors, anchored off the coast of what is now southern Maine came across a young Native American mother in a canoe with her child.

There had been tales circulating around that an Indian baby could swim from birth, so the sailors decided to put this to the test. They captured the canoe, took the baby from the mother and threw him right into the water, where he drowned.

When the mother returned to her tribe, she spoke with the chief who instructed the medicine man to place a curse upon the river. The curse was said to go like this. Three or more white man shall die in this river every year.

He then warned me to be very careful around here.

This wouldn’t be the last time I heard of it either. While telling my grandmother the story, she dug out a box of 45 rpm records. There was a song about it, that she had, called the Curse of the Saco River. The song was sung by a local woman, although I do not remember who.

So far, to my knowledge, this number has held true. There are also various stories about the curse of the Saco River on the web. A Google search will turn some of them up. But I can testify that if you live in southern Maine, you are bound to see news stories every year of people drowning. Perhaps it’s just the nature of the beast. Perhaps it’s due to the carelessness of those who brave the waters. Then again, maybe there is something to this curse after all.

When Your Homeschooler Hits College Age 0

Jun 28, 2008 | Uncategorized

When you first decide to homeschool your child, it can be overwhelming. All sorts of questions abound: what should we study; how; am I qualified? After you’ve gotten yourself into a routine, though, many of those uncertainties seem to fade away as you and your child discover the world together. However, after you’ve been at it for a few years, you’re bound to notice that your child is reaching the age where people start asking about college.

That opens up a whole new can of worms for a homeschooler, and a whole new set of questions pop up. Will my homeschooler get into a good college? Will admissions officers look negatively on the homeschooling experience? Will my child fit in with the other students who are coming from a traditional school environment? The list is practically endless!

However, as most homeschooling parents are pleasantly surprised to discover, homeschooling doesn’t work against your child when it comes time for college. In fact, many of the nation’s top schools seek out homeschooled students because of their diverse learning experiences and broad knowledge base! The admissions process may be a little different for homeschoolers, who may or may not have completed many of the standardized tests that are offered in traditional school settings.

Many of the top schools take the time to interview every student they are considering for acceptance. An interview is the best place for the homeschooler to shine. It’s a chance to show all the knowledge and skills that are gained from homeschooling and it’s also the best place to show the independent thinking and maturity that often results from staying out of the traditional school setting. Since homeschoolers tend to be surrounded by adults more than children, they often demonstrate an ability to relate to the college environment more easily than a traditional student who has been indoctrinated in deference to authority and obedience to random rules designed to handle the herd.

The fact is, the college life is a lot different from a high school atmosphere. Most courses a student will take throughout their postsecondary education require few prerequisites that don’t come directly from the college experience. A high school course in history is quite different from one in university: high school courses are designed to teach facts and basic skills, while a college course is designed to teach theories and independent thought.

The one aspect of the college admissions process that your homeschool student may miss out on is some of the scholarship opportunities. Many of the sports or club scholarships require participation in a high school environment. However, there are many scholarships available that aren’t tied to these activities, or will accept participation in community teams or clubs as equivalent. Make sure that you put the same effort into researching your college applications that you do into creating your homeschool experience.
